Türkiye's Dardanelles Strait Shipping Lanes Reopened
As the wildfire in Çanakkale Province in northwestern Türkiye was completely under control, the Dardanelles Strait, an important international shipping route that was once closed, resumed operations in the early morning of the 9th.
The Dardanelles, along with the Sea of Marmara and the Bosphorus, form the Turkish Straits. This strait is the only shipping route connecting the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea and is one of the world's busiest waterways. Official data shows that nearly 46,000 ships passed through the Dardanelles in 2024.
Turkey announced on the 8th that it would temporarily close both directions of the Dardanelles to allow for firefighting operations.
Turkish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ibrahim Yumakli stated on social media on the 9th that two wildfires in Çanakkale Province had forced the evacuation of nearly 1,000 residents and destroyed numerous homes. Thanks to the tireless efforts of firefighters, the fires have been brought under control.
Wildfires have recently erupted across Turkey due to high temperatures, drought, and strong winds. Two fires broke out in Çanakkale Province on the 7th and spread rapidly, driven by winds. Authorities warned that the fire risk will persist until October.
