Market trends:
Since the beginning of 2025, global orders for liquefied natural gas bunker vessels (LNGBVs) have surpassed those for traditional LNG carriers, with several shipping giants entering the market. Well-known shipping companies such as Celsius Tankers, The Caravel Group, Evalend Shipping, Eastern Pacific Shipping, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), and Huaguang Shipping have all launched LNGBV newbuilding projects in the past 12 months.
Market share:
LNGBV orders showed stronger growth momentum, driven by expectations of a steady expansion of the LNG dual-fuel fleet. Data shows that the proportion of LNG-powered alternative fuel vessels has climbed to 40% of total tonnage this year, a significant increase from 31% in the 2020-2024 period.
Expected trends:
It is estimated that by 2028, there will be over 1,150 LNG dual-fuel vessels in operation worldwide, and annual LNG bunkering demand is expected to exceed 50 million tons by 2045. Demand and orders for LNGBVs are also expected to continue to grow this year. However, Regan noted that a certain "stalemate" is emerging in the sector, with shipowners increasing pressure on charterers.
