1. SOLAS, paragraph 1, regulation 7, paragraph 1.3, clearly states:
• Less than half of the total number of lifebuoys shall be fitted with self-igniting lights complying with Regulation 2.1.2;
• At least two of these lifebuoys shall also be fitted with self-igniting smoke signals complying with Regulation 2.1.3 and capable of being rapidly released from the navigation bridge;
• Lifebuoys fitted with self-igniting lights and lifebuoys fitted with both self-igniting lights and self-igniting smoke signals shall be distributed equally on both sides of the vessel.
2. LSA Chapter I Personal Lifesaving Equipment Lifebuoy Self-Activating Smoke Signals
1. The lifebuoy must be constructed to withstand being dropped into the water from its stowed position to the waterline at its lightest sea level or 30 m, whichever is greater, without damaging the lifebuoy or its accessories.
2. If the lifebuoy is equipped with a white smoke signal and a white light device for rapid release, it must have a mass of not less than 4 kg.
3. While afloat in calm waters, emit a uniform, brightly colored smoke signal for not less than 15 minutes;
4. During the entire period of the smoke signal emission, it must not ignite explosively or emit any flame;
5. It must not become wet in waves;
6. When completely submerged in water, it must continue to emit smoke for at least 10 seconds;
7. It must be capable of withstanding the drop test required by 2.1.1.6;
8. It must be equipped with a rapid release mechanism that automatically releases the lifebuoy, the trigger signal, and a self-igniting light connected to the lifebuoy, with a mass not exceeding 4 kg.
