In the field of ship materials, marine rock wool boards stand out with their unique performance advantages, showing significant differences compared with similar products such as common glass wool boards.


From the perspective of fireproof performance, marine rock wool board has obvious advantages.

• Marine rock wool board is mainly made of natural rocks such as basalt melted at high temperature. It is an A1 non-combustible material with a melting point of more than 1000℃, a working temperature of about 600℃, and a fire resistance time of up to 4 hours.

• Although glass wool is also a Class A non-combustible material, its melting limit is 400-600℃, the operating temperature is generally around 260℃, and the fire resistance time is only 0.5 hours. In an environment such as ships that have extremely high requirements for fire safety, marine rock wool boards can more effectively prevent the spread of fire and buy more time for personnel evacuation and fire fighting.


In terms of thermal insulation.

•The thermal conductivity of marine rock wool board is 0.036 - 0.04W/(m・K) (ambient temperature 25℃), and the thermal conductivity of glass wool is 0.032 - 0.035W/(m・K) (ambient temperature 25℃). Glass wool has a slight advantage in data.

•However, the thermal insulation performance of marine rock wool board is more stable in high temperature environment. When the ship is sailing, the temperature of the engine room and other parts is high. The rock wool board can continue to maintain a good thermal insulation effect, reduce heat transfer, maintain stable cabin temperature, and reduce the energy consumption of air conditioning and other equipment.


In terms of sound absorption and noise reduction, both have open-pore fiber structures and have certain sound absorption effects.

• Glass wool fibers are slender, evenly distributed, and more fluffy inside, with relatively good sound absorption performance and can quickly dissipate sound waves.

• However, marine rock wool boards have a higher density and perform well in blocking sound transmission and reducing noise. They are more suitable for environments such as ships that require sound insulation, and can effectively reduce the interference of noise such as engine operation and water flow on the work and life of crew members.


In terms of compressive strength, marine rock wool boards perform outstandingly.

• Marine rock wool boards can be made into materials with a density of up to 200 kg, which can withstand various external forces during the operation of the ship, have high compressive strength and are not easy to deform. • The density of glass wool is about 110 kg, and its compressive strength is relatively low. If certain parts of the ship need to withstand greater pressure, rock wool boards are obviously more suitable.

Water absorption.

• The water repellency of hydrophobic marine rock wool board is ≥99%, and the water absorption rate is ≤1kg/m³ (water absorption rate after immersion in water for 24 hours).

• The water absorption rate of glass wool is ≥3kg/m3, and its dimensional stability is poor. Once it absorbs water, it is easy to swell and destroy the insulation system.

• Ships are in a humid environment for a long time. Marine rock wool boards can effectively resist water intrusion and maintain their own stable performance.
