All types of ships should select lifeboats and rescue boats according to different navigation areas and different ship types, in accordance with the requirements of the SOLAS Convention or ZS Regulations, and taking into account the special requirements of the shipowner.
1. Cargo ship
When a ship is equipped with two fully enclosed lifeboats, the lifeboat on the starboard side is usually used as a rescue boat, which can save the configuration of a rescue boat. Whether the fully enclosed lifeboat uses a side door or a rear door should be determined according to the layout of the ship's walls. If a cargo ship uses a free-fall lifeboat, since this type of boat cannot be used as a rescue boat, a separate rescue boat must be equipped. Therefore, generally speaking, it is more economically expensive to configure a free-fall lifeboat than to configure two davit-landed lifeboats.
2. Passenger ships
Fully enclosed lifeboats are expensive, so passenger ships generally use partially enclosed lifeboats. However, free-fall lifeboats are not allowed to be used on passenger ships. Partially enclosed or fully enclosed lifeboats used by passenger ships can also be used as rescue boats if they meet the requirements of rescue boats. Among the rescue boats of ro-ro passenger ships, at least one is a fast rescue boat.
