Differences between Seawater Pressure Tanks And Freshwater Pressure Tanks

1. Differences in Purpose

✅ Seawater Pressure Tank

  • Supplies non-potable seawater for sanitary and flushing purposes, including: toilet flushing, deck washing, anchor chain rinsing, cleaning of engine room equipment, and emergency fire-fighting water supply.

  • Not for human consumption, bathing, or galley (kitchen) use.

  • Water source is drawn directly from the sea (overboard).

✅ Freshwater Pressure Tank

  • Supplies clean, potable-grade freshwater for domestic use, including: drinking, galley (kitchen) operations, showering, laundry, and as a closed-loop cooling medium for certain equipment.

  • Often categorized into general-purpose domestic freshwater and dedicated potable water; the latter is subject to stricter sanitary standards.

  • Water source is derived from freshwater generators, shore-supplied water, or onboard freshwater tanks.

2. Materials and Corrosion Protection (The Key Difference)

✅ Seawater Pressure Tanks

  • Due to the high salinity and strong corrosivity of seawater, 316L stainless steel or bronze valves are preferred.

  • If carbon steel is used, the interior must be treated with a heavy-duty, seawater-resistant protective coating.

  • All associated piping, valves, and wetted parts of pressure gauges must be resistant to seawater corrosion to prevent pitting and blockages caused by salt deposits.

✅ Freshwater Pressure Tanks

  • Freshwater has low corrosivity; 304 stainless steel or carbon steel with a food-grade epoxy coating is sufficient.

  • For potable (drinking) water applications, a food-grade internal lining is mandatory to prevent water contamination; standard stainless steel valves are generally acceptable.

3. Auxiliary Filtration and Pre-treatment

✅ Seawater Tank: Must be equipped with an upstream seawater strainer (to filter out seaweed, sediment, and shell fragments). As salt deposits accumulate easily, the strainer requires regular disassembly, cleaning, and descaling.

✅ Freshwater Tank: The drinking water supply line must be equipped with UV disinfection and activated carbon filtration. Since there is less sediment and debris, the maintenance interval is longer, and the rate of scale formation is significantly slower.

4. Sanitary Standards and Certification Requirements

✅ Freshwater (Drinking Water) Pressure Tank: Must comply with sanitary standards for drinking water. Classification societies (such as CCS) mandate specific requirements for the internal coatings and materials used. Furthermore, the system must be protected against contamination from oil-laden compressed air.

✅ Seawater Pressure Tank: Not subject to food-grade sanitary requirements; must only meet standards for pressure vessels, corrosion resistance, and the prevention of blockages caused by marine organisms.
