Well Installation Azimuth Thruster / Rudder Propeller

The Rudder Propeller can be freely steered through 360 degrees around the stern. It is a combined propulsion and steering unit, so that the full thrust is available in any direction for the vessel.
The Rudder Propeller / Azimuth Thruster can be operated by mechanical, hydraulic or electric - hydraulic unit, and can be in active service as main propulsion, auxiliary propulsion and dynamic positioning of the vessel, which are usually used in tugs, push boats, ferry boats and barges etc.

Well installation Azimuth Thruster / Rudder Propeller is especially for tugs, ferries, well station, floating dock and survey ships.

The Rudder Propeller / Azimuth Thruster is mounted in the well. The stern length varies with the requirement of the application. The top mounting plate of the well should, if at all possible, be above the water line so that the Rudder Propeller / Azimuth Thruster can be installed and removed when the ship is floating.

Well installation varies with the distance between the Rudder Propeller / Azimuth Thruster and the diesel engine. When the engine room is very small, the Rudder Propeller / Azimuth Thruster can be near to the diesel engine and suitable for application in lont-range transmission between diesel engine and rudder propeller / azimuth thruster.

Arrangment
Power transmission of the propulsion device depends on max input torque of the device. Propulsion application type, prime mover type and vessel type affect actual input torque. Please kindly contact our technical engineer for propulsion type selection.
Rated input torque MP of prime mover(diesel, electric motor or hydraulic motor) is important technical date for propulsion type selection. Calculation formula is as below:


Mp ≤ Sf * MR
Mp = N * 9549 / n
Sf = fz * fl * fs


Marks: 
Mp(Nm): Output torque of prime mover
Sf: Rudder propeller service factors
Mr(Nm): Max input torque of rudder propeller
N(KW): Output power of prime mever 
n(r/min): Input speed of rudder propeller


The desing torque can't be taken as the basis for propulsion type selection according to our experience.
Different operation conditions must be taken into consideration. Common safety coefficient Sf of torque design can be based on the following:
Sf=0.75: Full power continuous rating 24 hours service(Container ships, push tugs)
Sf=0.9: Intermettent service with eventual full load( harbor tugs, floating crane)
Sf=1.0: Auxilliray installations(Tunnel thruster, DP-installations)

Safety coefficient Sf of propulsion device should meet the classification navigation specification. Sf should be between 0.33-0.67 for those with ice class requirement. For those with special installation request please contact our technical engineer for type selection.
